Retreat, Resign & Retire
Governor Beebe, acting through surrogates, has sent a message to "Joe Must Go" that he will not act until and unless he hears from other people.
Therefore, we have attached a petition to this posting for you to circulate and turn in to the city clerk. She will be asked to copy the petitions and forward them to the Office of the Governor of Arkansas.
Petition to Governor Beebe and City Clerk Ramsey
Dear Governor Beebe:
On August 15, 2007, you announced that you were appointing Helena-West Helena Alderman Joe St. Columbia to the Mississippi River Parkway Commission. As of today, it is our information that he is the Chairman of that Commission.
We are writing to you today to ask you to ask your appointee to resign from this very important commission which seeks to promote the region of this state bordering the Mississippi River. In short, he is representing Arkansas to the rest of the country and the world.
We make this request of you today for the following reasons. Mr. St. Columbia has disseminated at least three racist emails that are offensive to the African-American population of this state. First, an email surfaced that described the elected black leadership in Helena-West Helena as "monkeys" running the "zoo."
Second, Mr. St. Columbia disseminated an email that describes a scheme involving the welfare system in the state of Illinois. In addition to the urban legend being a bona fide lie, it is illustrated with a picture of a single black mother with nine kids and has a caption that says "They will do anything to game the system..." This clearly had a racial overtone and intent. If it did not, it would not have been necessary to have the picture.
Third, an email was sent by Mr. St. Columbia that had a picture with the title "In Honor of Black History Month." The image had two young black males with sagging pants, no shirt, gestures resembling gang signs, and a caption that said the young men could not get jobs because the white man was holding us back. In addition, the image came from a website called chimpout.com which is filled with racist pictures.
You can see the emails for yourself on this website as well as from reports on WMC-TV, WREG-TV, ABC24-TV (All are Memphis stations, the Arkansas Times, bluearkansasblog.com, and www.insidescooponline.com).
Clearly, this is not the kind of representation that the great State of Arkansas and the City of Helena-West Helena needs. Since this man is your appointee, we are hoping that you will publicly call for his resignation. Surely you do not want your office associated with this kind of vile material. As members of "Joe Must Go" and citizens of the State of Arkansas, we do not want and hope you will not tolerate this from any of your appointees.
Joe Must Go
Protesters were shocked Sunday morning when they went to the location of the Tamale Stand operated by controversial political icon Joe St. Columbia. Picket signs saying "Joe Must Go" "Be Accountable for Your Actions" "Leave our Neighborhood" "Monkeys don't eat Tamales" and others adorned the parking lot when Joe St. Columbia and his wife arrived around 10:30 a.m. to open for business on Saturday, April 9, 2011.
In the face of protesters, Joe St. Columbia excused his wife and declined to open for business. Reportedly, Former Alderman Bruce Hudson approached the protesters after the rally claiming to have heard about the rally. He was known to listen to a radio program called the Inside Scoop which airs each Saturday morning on KJIW FM 94.5 at 11:30 a.m. That program did report that Mayor Arnell Willis and the police had been at the scene harassing the protesters. Bruce Hudson defended St. Columbia and blamed the former mayor.
It has been shared with us that Turell Williams, Sr., spoke via phone with Mayor Arnell Willis who will meet with Turell on Monday to receive copies of the two (2) emails sent in addition to the Monkey email. The first of those emails dealt with Latrica Ryan of Flint, MI. The second dealt with little black boys and had the caption "It's the White Man Holding Us Back." That photo came from a website called chimpout.com.
Mayor Arnell Willis is under increasing pressure to do what is right and request St. Columbia's resignation. Julious McGruder, a local preacher, blasted Willis on the NAACP Radio program for Willis's stance that it is okay for a white man to call black folks monkeys. We will see if Mayor Willis gives McGruder the ole church handshake this week that will cause McGruder to reverse himself as he has done already with Mayor Willis.
At any rate, protesters have been in talks with supporters about the next steps to take and are continually receiving helpful information from a loose coalition of believers. If you are at all interested in helping or if you have copies of Joe St. Columbia emails that should be shared with the world, please forward them to email@example.com.
It is our goal that Joe St. Columbia be held accountable for his actions. We can't read his heart but we can see his actions.
There were a group of citizens protesting this morning in front, beside or otherwise near the Pasquale's Tamale stand on Highway 49 West near Sears today around 10:30 a.m.
The report was found online at: Tamale Hut Shutdown

Joe St. Columbia forwarded this email, too!!!
Latrica Ryan is the mother featured in the story forwarded by Joe St. Columbia. The story in Joe's email lies about Ms. Ryan and her family.
